Cooler weather can change how your skin feels. Before adding another product, consider how your current routine is working for you.
Pay attention to tightness
Lower humidity and indoor heating can contribute to dry skin. Tightness after cleansing, flaking or stinging may be a reason to simplify your routine. Persistent symptoms need assessment because dryness does not have one single cause.
Review three essentials
- Cleanse gently: Consider a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and avoid very hot water.
- Support hydration: A moisturizer suited to your skin type, applied while skin is slightly damp, can help retain moisture. A richer formula is not automatically better for everyone.
- Continue sun protection: Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen, shade and protective clothing remain relevant outside summer.
More active ingredients are not always better
Increasing several exfoliating acids or retinoid products at once may worsen irritation. Rather than scrubbing away dry flakes, review the products you use with your clinician. Do not change prescribed treatments without discussing them with the prescriber.
Prepare for a useful consultation
Bring the names of your products, how often you apply them and when the discomfort began. Explaining which step leaves your skin feeling tight can be more useful than arriving with a particular procedure in mind. Painful cracks, bleeding, marked redness or continuing itching warrant dermatological assessment.
